Do you even lift, yogi?

classes workshops Jun 08, 2018

Yoga + Weights. I heard the buzz around a brand new class to Y1.  I saw people leaving Studio B with weights in their hands. I couldn’t help but be intrigued. Yoga is practiced at the studio and weights are used at the gym, right? I’ve put those two forms of movement and workouts in separate categories… until now.  Enter Power Fusion. A beautiful blend of yoga and weights married together in a 60 minute class. I’ve been to the class and even spoke with the creator herself. If you’re like me, and wondering what it’s all about, here’s the breakdown.

SO, WHAT IS IT?

Let’s break it down a little. The word ‘fusion’ can be defined as the process of joining two or more things together to form a single entity.  Which is exactly why the title fits this class perfectly. Power Fusion is the marriage of Baptiste yoga and weights. Wendi Williams brought this class to Yoga One and describes it as a perfect way to tone while still practicing the asana.

WEIGHT FOR WHAT?

Do not let the word ‘weight’ intimidate you.  The weights that are encouraged are anywhere between 2-5 lbs. For newbies, it is suggested to start with 2 lb. weights and work your way up.  When working larger body muscles, more weight is suggested, however, it all depends on the number of reps and which muscle area the exercise is working.  My take on it? I checked my ego at the door and opted for the 3 lb. option. When 3 lbs. was too much (and in some exercises it was), I simply placed my weights down and finished the exercise without them.

WHY THE WEIGHT?

Why mess with the flow? Well, there are a number of answers to that.  The Baptiste flow without the weights tones the entire body, yes. However, incorporating weights adds in spot toning.  Spot toning is when one specific muscle group is concentrated on in an exercise. Another factor is that it is FUN. Never did I ever think about adding weights into my Warrior 2 pose, however, when I did, I couldn’t help but smile.

WHY POWER FUSION

If you’re not convinced quite yet, let me break this down for you:

  • Power Fusion is a fun and friendly combination of toning muscles with weights and practicing the Baptiste Flow.
  • Power Fusion still incorporates the 5 Pillars of Baptiste Yoga: drishti, breath, tapas, foundation, and movement to breath (vinyasa). **In fact, using the 5 Pillars only helps you during this class.
  • Power Fusion is a great way to shake things up while still incorporating your love of the flow.

THE WHEN & WHERE

You can find Power Fusion (currently) on Wednesday evenings at Y1 Central in Studio B at 6:00pm.  Be on the lookout for a future pop-up class or workshop. The Power Fusion workshop will be more instructive and a great opportunity for newcomers.  It is a great introduction into the anatomy and physiological side of it. Let me remind you, YOU ARE READY NOW. Grab those weights (be it 2 or 5 lbs), and come support a new, fresh class.  You will not regret it!
